Preserve your own piece of history within the walls of the Smithsonian’s home in Pittsburgh. Visitors can personalize each time capsule based on their personal interests. Items may include family photos, military medals, school report cards, diplomas, or any other special momento you would like to to save for future generations.
Filling a time capsule is the perfect way to celebrate milestones, such as birthdays, anniversaries, graduations, or family reunions. Each time capsule is sealed inside a specially-designed wall located in the foyer of the first floor McGuinn Gallery. A stainless steel, brass, or aluminum plaque serves as a nameplate to identify the location of your time capsule. History Center staff can help you with archival-quality preservation materials or assistance in preparing the items for storage within your time capsule.
Cost: Time capsules are available for contributions of $2,000, $4,000, and $6,000.
Pay tribute to family members, friends, or your own accomplishments with a 6-by-12-inch tile in the History Center’s first floor Great Hall. Made of iron, aluminum, or stainless steel, each tile is engraved with an individual’s or company’s name up to 75 characters long.
Visitors who purchase tiles are also invited to write a 250-word tribute that will be preserved in the History Center’s Detre Library & Archives.
Cost: Tiles are available for contributions of $500, $1,5000, $2,500, and $5,000.
If you have a commemorative tile already and would like to find its location, please use our commemorative tile database for your search.

A handsome brass donor plaque is included with each rocking chair purchase along with a 25-character inscription securely fastened to the chair’s head rests.
Rocking chairs are available at both the History Center and Meadowcroft Rockshelter and Historic Village.
Cost: Rocking chairs are available for a contribution of $500.
