The Fort Pitt Museum and Point State Park invite homeschool students in in 4th, 5th, and 6th grades to participate in a series of in-depth classes related to history and environmental studies. Classes will be both hands-on and minds-on, and will include reading and writing activities, student led discussions, and take-home assignments for students to continue their learning after class.

Life at Fort Pitt and Soldier Hike

  • Students will research the lives of 18th century soldiers, including evidence of their daily lives and government issued supplies.
  • Students will interact with a Fort Pitt Museum costumed soldier to discuss frontier life, which includes pitching an 18th century reproduction tent (weather dependent).
  • Students will learn basic map and compass reading skills and practice those skills on a hike around Point State Park. Students will also learn about essential items that they should always take on a hike.

Class Schedule

9:45 – 9:55 a.m. – Drop off at the Fort Pitt Museum

10 a.m. to noon – Class session
Noon to 12:30 p.m. – Lunch* on site

*No food or drink will be provided by the museum or park

12:30 – 1:45 p.m. – Class session
1:45 – 2 p.m. – Pick up at the Fort Pitt Museum

Exact times are subject to change due to weather and scheduled activities.

Registration

The cost is $10 per student per class.

Please note that this is a drop off class. If parents wish to remain on site during the program, please notify staff ahead of time for a complimentary museum admission ticket. Any other accompanying children or adults will be required to pay regular admission fees.

Registration will close the week before the scheduled class. If minimum class numbers are not met, registrants will be notified of cancellation and refunded.
