The Fort Pitt Museum and Point State Park invite homeschool students in in 4th, 5th, and 6th grades to participate in a series of in-depth classes related to history and environmental studies. Classes will be both hands-on and minds-on, and will include reading and writing activities, student led discussions, and take-home assignments for students to continue their learning after class.

18th Century Western Pennsylvanian American Indians

  • Students will learn about the three main tribes occupying the Forks of the Ohio River at the time of Fort Pitt.
  • Students will research firsthand accounts of American Indians in 18th Century Western Pennsylvania, including treaty negotiations and captivity narratives.
  • Students will weave wampum belts using modern day materials in order to conduct a mock treaty negotiation.

Class Schedule

9:45 – 9:55 a.m. – Drop off at the Fort Pitt Museum

10 a.m. to noon – Class session
Noon to 12:30 p.m. – Lunch* on site

*No food or drink will be provided by the museum or park

12:30 – 1:45 p.m. – Class session
1:45 – 2 p.m. – Pick up at the Fort Pitt Museum

Exact times are subject to change due to weather and scheduled activities.

Registration

The cost is $10 per student per class.

Please note that this is a drop off class. If parents wish to remain on site during the program, please notify staff ahead of time for a complimentary museum admission ticket. Any other accompanying children or adults will be required to pay regular admission fees.

Registration will close the week before the scheduled class. If minimum class numbers are not met, registrants will be notified of cancellation and refunded.
