This September, the History Center and Western Pennsylvania Sports Museum will welcome a new exhibition commemorating the 50th anniversary of one of baseball’s most famous teams.
Visitors will have the opportunity to experience an interactive trip "around the diamond” as part of the new Beat ‘Em Bucs - The Story of the 1960 Pittsburgh Pirates exhibit, sponsored by UPMC Health Plan.
The centerpiece of the Beat ‘Em Bucs exhibit is a lifelike museum figure of Pirates legend Bill Mazeroski which captures the iconic moment that won the 1960 World Series, just as Maz connected for a solo home run over the left field wall at Forbes Field. The museum figure will be unveiled with Mazeroski in attendance at the exhibit’s grand opening on Labor Day, Sept. 6.
The exhibit will also feature images, one-of-a-kind artifacts, audio, and film that recount the 1960 season, including:
- The pitching rubber and first base from the seventh game of the World Series
- The game-used jersey of 1960 National League Most Valuable Player Dick Groat and bat used by baseball legend Roberto Clemente
- Individually signed baseballs from each member of the 1960 team
- An extremely rare ticket from the 1903 World Series, the first World Series in baseball history and the first of seven trips to the Fall Classic for the Pirates
- Pittsburgh native Burton Morris' original painting, “Maz Double Play,” showing Mazeroski, an eight-time Gold Glove winner, turning a double play
- Fan memorabilia, such as pennants, banners, and much more
Maz, You’re Up! – Book Release and Signing
The exhibit opening will also feature a special book release for a new children’s book titled “Maz, You’re Up!” Author Kelly Mazeroski will join her father-in-law Bill for an exclusive book signing from 11 a.m. to noon in the History Center’s first floor Great Hall.
Books can be purchased in the History Center museum shop for $12.95. The Mazeroskis will only sign copies of the book. No other memorabilia or photos brought in by museum visitors will be signed.
