WHAT IS NHD?
National History Day encourages students to research history in an exciting and creative way. Either individually or in groups, students create exhibits, produce documentaries, write papers, design websites, or stage performances. Each activity is judged and first, second, and third place winners move on to state and possibly national competition. The NHD theme for 2010 is Innovation in History: Impact and Change
Entrants must be students in grades 6th through 8th for the Junior Division, and in 9th through 12th for the Senior Division. Students may be from private, public, parochial, independent or homeschools, OR students involved in a youth organization.
Teachers/Mentors/Sponsors/Advisors support student entrants through instruction and guidance. Any adult can serve as the sponsor for a student wishing to enter the competition - they don’t have to be a teacher! This sponsor is responsible for initiating the registration process.

Registration begins with the teacher registering their school. If you have participated in NHD PITT any time within the past two years, your school will appear in the drop-down menu. If your school is not listed, you may add it to the list. The system will allow the teacher/educator to input themselves and the names of the participating students. The students will complete their registration by entering their contact information, their entry details, and necessary parental/ guardian permissions. Teachers may view and edit all student information, as they determine that which is still needed.
Green checkmarks appear next to information which has been successfully entered. Should you need to request or look up additional information, you can exit at anytime, knowing that your work will be saved. The system will not allow you to complete your registration until all required information and permissions are entered. Upon completion of the registration please print out and save your confirmation sheet. This will serve as a record of your registration for the competition on March 20 or 21.
All students/all entries - including papers and Web sites - will be assigned an interview time with the judges on March 20 and 21.
This Web based system allows the Registrar and Regional Coordinator at the History Center to view all data as it is added to the database. If you have questions or difficulties, or need more information, please e-mail NHDPITT@hswp.org.
NHD PITT emphasizes the relevance of history in everyone’s life. The event itself and the research involved in producing an entry provide a high-quality, personal experience that empowers students to delve deeply into a topic that resonates with them. Not everyone comes away from the competition with a medal, but everyone comes away a winner.
