A former educator\, she holds a doctorate from the University of Pittsburgh and has shared her work widely in the United States and Italy through appearances on NPR\, ABC\, FOX\, RAI Uno\, and at the United Nations. \nCataldi divides her time between Annapolis\, Maryland\, and Florence\, Italy. In Florence\, she rowed with the Florence Dragon Boat Team for breast cancer survivors\, served on the board of the International School of Florence\, and is a member of AILO\, an organization that supports charitable causes through volunteerism and fundraising. She is also a founding member of the Florence Literary Society.

Don’t miss a guided tour of the Rockshelter\, the oldest site of human habitation in North America! \nMeadowcroft is an outdoor site\, so be sure to dress for the weather and wear comfortable shoes. SUMMARY:An Evening with Maxwell King: “Fire in the Night Sky”
DESCRIPTION:Discover the life and work of pioneering industrial landscape artist Aaron Gorson from author and philanthropist Maxwell King as he shares insights from his new book\, “Fire in the Night Sky: The Steel Mill Paintings of Aaron Gorson.” \nBorn in Lithuania\, Gorson came to Philadelphia in 1890 at 18 and studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts before continuing his studies in Paris. He later settled in Pittsburgh\, where he painted powerful and dramatic nighttime scenes of the city’s steel mills until the early 1920s. \nFeaturing 39 Gorson paintings\, “Fire in the Night Sky” places his art within the larger story of Pittsburgh’s steel industry\, revealing how the industrial and technological achievements of the era transformed Pittsburgh and the world. It is the first complete biography of the man who captured Pittsburgh’s fiery steel mills on paper. \nKing will be joined by History Center President and CEO Andy Masich\, who will preview the museum’s upcoming exhibition on the life and artwork of Gorson\, opening on Nov. 14. \nFollowing the program\, King will sign copies of “Fire in the Night Sky.”\nBooks will be available for purchase at the event. \nreserve tickets \nAdmission\nAdmission is $10 for non-members and $5 for members. DESCRIPTION:Explore the lives of Western Pennsylvania railroaders and discover the often-overlooked records that reveal their fascinating stories with the Detre Library & Archives. \nAcross generations\, Western Pennsylvania’s railroad industry has provided a stunning array of job opportunities for immigrants\, African Americans\, and other Appalachian laborers. Hop in and come along for a tour of the historical sources that capture glimpses into the lives of these workers. \nJoin professional genealogist Kate Townsend\, CG® to uncover research strategies and materials unique to the railroad industry\, including company newsletters\, immigration records\, newspaper clippings\, employment records\, accident reports\, union records\, maps\, pension files\, historic photographs\, and more. \nTrack your ancestors’ connections to rail lines and companies across Western Pennsylvania while exploring connections to railroad disasters and their lasting impact on families. \nLocal archivists will also share lightning talks highlighting lesser-known railroad industry resources within their collections. \nThe Detre Library & Archives’ Blue-Collar Ancestry series explores the family histories of working Western Pennsylvanians\, with each installment highlighting a different industry and theme. Partnering with locally and nationally-based genealogists and researchers\, the series connects participants with helpful resources and strategies to help them uncover their family’s industrial roots. \nreserve tickets \nAdmission\nTickets are $10 for non-members and $5 for members. \nThis is a hybrid program\, with opportunities to attend the program in-person or virtually. \nLive captioning will be provided for this event. She is the owner of Family History Investigations LLC\, where she helps clients uncover\, document\, and understand their family stories. She has held the Certified Genealogist® credential since February 2024. \nKate is a frequent national and regional speaker\, presenting for genealogical societies\, libraries\, and conferences\, including the National Genealogical Society (NGS) Family History Conference\, New England Regional Genealogical Consortium\, Ohio Genealogical Society Conference\, and RootsTech. She has served on the faculty and as co-course coordinator for the Genealogical Research Institute of Pittsburgh. Kate has contributed research for the PBS television series Finding Your Roots. In addition\, she is a writer for the NGS Magazine.
