Member Day at Meadowcroft Rockshelter and Historic Village

Bring the whole family for a day of outdoor fun at Meadowcroft! Experience everyday 19th century rural life in the Meadowcroft Historic Village, go back 400 years and explore a recreated Monongahela Indian Village or learn about Meadowcroft Rockshelter, the oldest site of human habitation in North America.

  • Take a yellow school bus down to the Meadowcroft Rockshelter, provided by local GG&C Bus Company.
  • Receive an exclusive Meadowcroft travel picnic blanket (one per member household).
  • Lunch options available for pre-purchase at the time of registration.*
    *Lunches not available for purchase onsite. No substitutions.

Members will also have the rare opportunity to see archaeologists working at the Meadowcroft Rockshelter from 10am until 4pm. Conducted under the direction of Dr. James Adovasio, Director of Archaeology for the History Center, the archaeological excavation will take place at the National Historic Landmark in levels of the site which date back thousands of years.

Registration is encouraged. Please bring your membership card with you for admission.

Member Preview of Pittsburgh’s John Kane: The Life & Art of an American Workman

Join us for an exclusive members-only “first look” at the History Center’s new Pittsburgh’s John Kane: The Life & Art of an American Workman exhibition on Friday, May 20. Enjoy exclusive access to the gallery and mingle with curators, who will provide a behind-the-scenes perspective on the making of the exhibit, which opens to the public May 21.

Light refreshments available from 11am to 3pm.

The exhibit features 37 original works of art and dozens of artifacts that explore the world of John Kane – a Scottish immigrant and laborer who unexpectedly achieved breakthrough success as a painter of Pittsburgh landscapes, city scenes, and people.

The Pittsburgh’s John Kane exhibition will feature Kane paintings from America’s most prestigious art museums and collectors, including The Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Smithsonian’s Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, American Folk Art Museum, The Detroit Institute of Arts, The Phillips Collection, and others.
