Early Learning Tours

To reserve an Early Learning Tour, please fill out an Early Learners Tour Form.

Please reserve a tour at least one month in advance of your visit.

Time: 1 to 1 1/2 hours, plus 1/2 hour for lunch
Grade Level: Age 3 through 3rd grade
Group Size: Maximum of 75 students
Tour Availability: Monday through Friday, year round, 9 a.m. – noon
Cost: $6 per student. Two chaperones and one teacher admitted free; additional chaperones pay $6.50 each.
Chaperone Policy: One chaperone per eight students required.

Pittsburgh Plays!

Visit the History Center to see the toys, games, and activities that kids growing up in Western Pennsylvania have enjoyed. Imagine what it was like as a child in Western Pennsylvania as you explore the museum and discover favorite play things from long ago. Children will play and learn about toys from the past, hear a story and do a scavenger hunt in “the museum’s attic,” visit the new Discovery Place exhibition to learn about new innovations in games made in Pittsburgh, and practice sports skills like jumping and throwing.

Grades: Pre-K – 1st grade
Program Length: 1 1/2 hours

Moving Around Pittsburgh

There are many ways to get around in Western Pennsylvania! Wear your running shoes and bring your imagination as we investigate the History Center’s collection of transportation-related artifacts. Children will board a Pittsburgh trolley from the 1940s, compare vehicles from today with those of the past, and have fun with interactive gallery activities about the different types of transportation used today and in the past in this region.

Grades: Pre-K – 2nd grade
Program Length: 1 hours
Maximum: 75 students

Pittsburgh Now and Then

Travel back in time to explore Pittsburgh’s rich past through the history of homes, vehicles, and toys that bring Western Pennsylvania’s stories to life. Students will journey into the past through three different exhibits during this hands-on program, uncovering stories of continuity and change in the city’s history, and concluding with students designing and building for Pittsburgh’s future.
