The Fort Pitt Museum and Point State Park invite homeschool students in in 4th, 5th, and 6th grades to participate in a series of in-depth classes related to history and environmental studies. Classes will be both hands-on and minds-on, and will include reading and writing activities, student led discussions, and take-home assignments for students to continue their learning after class.
The Delaware Treaty
On Saturday, September 29, members of the Delaware Nation of Indians will visit the Fort Pitt Museum and reenact the negotiations that took place at Fort Pitt 240 years ago. This class is to provide background information for students and encourage the students and their families to attend and participate in the activities at the end of the month.
- Students will learn about the Delaware Treaty signed in 1778 at Fort Pitt, which was the first treaty signed between the new United States and an American Indian Nation.
- Students will analyze copies of the Delaware Treaty and negotiations, discuss alternate options, and reenact their own Delaware Treaty based on information learned in the museum.
- Students will weave wampum belts to utilize during their reenactment of the Delaware Treaty.
