A.H. Gorson: Analyzing Art and Primary Sources
Discover new ways to bring primary sources into your classroom through the lens of the upcoming exhibition, A.H. Gorson: Painting the Steel City.
A Jewish immigrant from Lithuania, Gorson arrived in Pittsburgh in 1902 and soon began painting the city’s steel mills. Where others saw grit and grime, Gorson saw light, color, and beauty, capturing the fire, smoke, and industrial landscapes that defined Pittsburgh during the early 20th century.
During this hands-on workshop, educators will explore Gorson’s work through historical image analysis, comparing his artistic interpretations of Pittsburgh with historic photographs, postcards, and other primary sources.
Teachers will also receive a special walkthrough of Painting the Steel City and discover History Center resources they can use in their classrooms.
