Presented as part of the From Slavery to Freedom Film Series, “Lowndes County and the Road to Black Power” tells the story of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC) organizers who fought not just for voting rights, but for Black Power in Lowndes County.

The struggle for civil rights took a major turn in rural Alabama as the decades old Jim Crow discrimination that prevented voting rights, mobility, and economic opportunity hardened in opposition to African American plight. The passing of the Voting Rights Act of 1965 represented not the culmination of the Civil Rights Movement, but the beginning of a new, crucial chapter. Nowhere was this next battle better epitomized than in Lowndes County, Ala., a rural, impoverished town with a vicious history of racist terrorism.

The From Slavery to Freedom film series will screen the film “Lowndes County and the Road to Black Power” to recall and learn about the dynamic of civil rights struggle that gave rise to Black power as voters and changemakers.

This powerful documentary isn’t a story of hope. It’s a story of action.

The 2025 From Slavery to Freedom Film Series will feature films that reflect expressions of freedom, rights, and revolution in the African Diaspora. From the United States, Africa, and the Caribbean, these films will bring to light discussion and revelation of the continual quest for humanity and equity.
