Homeschool students are invited to experience Meadowcroft’s educational programming.

Through hands-on programs that examine life on the land in the upper Ohio Valley, students will experience the cultural changes of the region from prehistory to the 19th century at Meadowcroft’s Homeschool Open House.

Explore rural life with a visit to Meadowcroft’s 19th century village. Students can visit historic houses, a blacksmith’s shop, and a one room schoolhouse to learn what life was like before modern conveniences and dip a candle to take home.

Step further back in time by visiting our recreated 16th century Indian Village where students can learn about the complex relationship between nature and man during a program emphasizing our area’s late prehistoric agriculturalists, the Monongahela culture. Learn about the natural resources available in the area and the products made from both plants and animals. While there, students can try their hand at using an atlatl, a prehistoric spear thrower.

Tours of the Meadowcroft Rockshelter will also be available throughout the day. During this lecture-based presentation students will learn about the hunter-gatherer lifestyles of the people that camped here over its 19,000-year history. As part of a Rockshelter tour, students will also learn about the science of archaeology and how evidence recovered at the site impacted the North American peopling theory.

Admission

Advance registration is recommended, but not required, for this event. The site will host educational programming between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m., and groups will choose the exhibits that suit their curriculum. We suggest planning to spend about 3 hours at Meadowcroft to experience all of our offerings.

Homeschool families please note: Meadowcroft Rockshelter and Historic Village is an outdoor facility, so make sure to dress for the weather! There is no food service on site, however picnic tables are available for your use and bringing packed lunches is encouraged.

NOTE TO GENERAL PUBLIC: This program is intended for homeschool students and their families to experience Meadowcroft’s field trip programming. General admission tickets will not be sold; any individual arriving onsite who is not visiting with a homeschool student will be denied entry. Meadowcroft’s fall hours are Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. through October.
