Emily Ruby, curator, Heinz History Center:
Pittsburgh native Jay Apt dreamed of becoming an astronaut at a young age, but at the time of the Apollo 11 launch, he didn’t think that was possible because he wore glasses and wasn’t a fighter pilot, which most of the astronauts at that time were.
So Jay Apt was at the launch of the Apollo 11 mission. He was representing the Model Rocketry magazine, which he helped found at Harvard. Included in his collection are the press kit, press pass, and photographs he took that day of the launch.
