Planning a Visit
The Detre Library & Archives is located on the 6th floor of the Senator John Heinz History Center. Click here for directions and parking information.
Though an appointment is not required when visiting during the Library & Archives’ public hours, we recommend contacting the reference desk before you arrive to ensure the materials are available for your visit.
When visiting the Library & Archives, patrons are asked to sign in at the reference desk. Those requesting to use archival collections are asked to fill out an application form. Briefcases, book bags, purses, coats, and laptop bags are required to be stored in free lockers outside of the reading room. Only pencils, notebooks, laptops/tablets, cameras, and handheld scanners may be brought into the reading room.
Access to the Library & Archives is free for all visitors. Visitors coming to the History Center solely to use the Library & Archives will not be charged admission; they will be given a special Library & Archives sticker at the Admissions Desk and directed to the sixth floor, where they will sign in. Paid admission to the museum is required to see the exhibits.

Other times available by appointment with advance notice (at least one week).
The Library & Archives will close at 3 p.m. on Thursday, April 4. It will also be closed on Saturday, April 27 due to the African American Genealogy Workshop, which will be held there. Please visit the event page for more details.
